How to enter an answer on the Digital SAT

Some Math questions have no answer choices: you type the answer into a box. In each of our practice tests that is 10 of the 44. The box takes 5 characters, or 6 with a minus sign. Type your exact answer to see every way it can be entered, and the entries that look right and earn nothing.

As you would write it on paper: a whole number, a decimal, a fraction such as 7/2, or a mixed number such as 3 1/2.

2/3 can be entered as it is. It fits the box as typed.

Every way to enter 2/3

  • 2/3As a fraction
  • .6666Cut off at the fourth digit
  • .6667Rounded at the fourth digit
  • 0.666Cut off at the fourth digit
  • 0.667Rounded at the fourth digit

Looks right, earns nothing

  • 0.66Stops before the fourth digit. The box has room for more, and a shorter decimal is a different number.
  • 0.67Stops before the fourth digit. The box has room for more, and a shorter decimal is a different number.
  • .66Stops before the fourth digit. The box has room for more, and a shorter decimal is a different number.
  • .67Stops before the fourth digit. The box has room for more, and a shorter decimal is a different number.

The rules, all six

5 characters, or 6 with a minus sign
The decimal point and the fraction slash each count as one character.
A fraction that does not fit becomes a decimal
100/3 fits. 1000/3 does not, so it is entered as 333.3.
A decimal that does not fit is cut off or rounded at the fourth digit
Two thirds is .6666 or .6667, or 0.666 or 0.667. Use the whole box.
No mixed numbers
Three and a half is 7/2 or 3.5. Typed as 31/2 it is read as thirty-one halves.
No symbols
No percent sign, comma or dollar sign. Type the number alone.
One answer
If a question has more than one correct answer, enter only one of them.

These are the rules in the College Board’s Bluebook Test Directions, Math Module Directions (Fall 2026), read on 14 October 2026 and restated in our words. The directions are shown at the start of the Math section and stay one click away for the whole of it.

Four answers, every way in

The first three are the examples the directions themselves give, and the tool agrees with each line of them.

Common questions

How many characters can I enter in a Digital SAT answer box?
Five for a positive answer and six for a negative one, counting the minus sign. A decimal point and a fraction slash each count as one character.
Is 0.66 accepted for two thirds on the Digital SAT?
No. A decimal that does not end has to be cut off or rounded at the fourth digit, so two thirds is entered as .6666, .6667, 0.666 or 0.667, or as the fraction 2/3. An entry of 0.66 or 0.67 stops too soon and receives no credit.
How do I enter a mixed number on the Digital SAT?
As an improper fraction or a decimal. Three and a half is entered as 7/2 or 3.5. The box has no way to type the space, so 3 1/2 becomes 31/2, which is read as thirty-one halves.
Should I round or cut off a long decimal?
Either is accepted, as long as it happens at the fourth digit. For two thirds, .6666 is cut off and .6667 is rounded, and both receive credit.
Do I type the percent sign or the dollar sign?
No. Symbols are not entered. If the answer is 45 percent and the question asks for the percent, type 45.
